This time it will be an experimental post, because it is, actually, a simple blog comment on 3 Resons Why Blog Commenting Is Important by Alex from howtospoter.com.
The reason why I’m publishing the comment on my blog is that it was considered a spam by Alex’s spam-proof system :) This must be some mistake.. But I find this case a very good idea for this post.
Besides, my readers know that I speak about web traffic and web promotion. Excellent promotion demands risks and unusual attempts to do something new, where you’ll be the first one… Isn’t this case a good and unusual way of web promotion? :)
My Spammed Comment on Alex’s Blog
Make sure you have read Alex’s post before reading the following comment:
Hi Alex,
Let me add several thoughts to your post :)
I would have agreed with you several months ago.. But now I should say, that I see this post very.. very controversial.
Why?
1. Commenting on blogs because of traffic is the least important reason. I have tracked it via Google analytics and understood, that only some rare units of readers follow the comments links. And if it’s your primary way of getting traffic, then you lose a lot of time (in most cases).
2. Your second subtopic is “Get Authority / SEO benefits”. Why they go side by side? :) What I mean is that these are extremely different sides of benefits of commenting on blogs.
You get authority.. yeah. I’d call this benefit the most important one. You whether decrease your authority because of *not very smart comments* or you, actually, increase it having your own strong point of view. But in this case you work for the blog owner. You have to impress him, because he can bring you tons of traffic by recommending you or retweeting your post or else. Your aim is not common readers, because they most likely will not read your comment with the same feelings like the author of the blog.
Speaking about SEO benefits.. Any dofollow link in comments is counted as a part of the entire HTML page (this relates to those blogs, that don’t redirect comments to special pages and which don’t have framed or iframed comment forms). This means, that you are totally right about SEO benefits. But still… Why did you put them into one subtopic? :)
3. You have mentioned very good aspect of visiting other blogs. It’s “Liked? Try it for your blog!”. Though you need to be careful.. people don’t like big changes on favorite websites and blogs.
PS. Don’t treat my comment a spam because of the name :) iWoodpecker is what I want to promote, not my real name. Thank you!
Best regards,
Allan
Alex has already reported via Twitter that it really could be his spam filter issue.

Do you enjoy ripping newspaper like this little baby? :) I couldn’t stand his laughter – very relaxing video.

Allan,
It was indeed my spam filter that blocked your comment, sorry about that. Since its not the first time it gives false positives – I removed it for now to see how it would impact the moderation on my part.
There are many points we can always argue. I still say that commenting on other blogs does lead to traffic – that is EXACTLY how I found your blog initially :-) – your comment on Doug’s blog.
Authority in that case was meant as an overall blog authority. Am no SEO expert and never claimed to be one but incoming links = authority under right conditions. Those are the basics.
And on last one – I can’t agree more :-) all is good in moderation!
Cheers and thanks for the response!
My recent blog: 3 Reasons Why Blog Commenting Is Important
In my opinion, this is a good comment! Why was it treated as a spammed comment? Sometimes, as a new blogger, i afraid to leave the comment that is controversial to the article. I’m still learning on how to leave a good comment. I think i have learnt something here. Thanks!

Alex,
“commenting on other blogs does lead to traffic” – in one way or another.. it, actually, leads to traffic :) But still.. I was speaking about some other aspects :)
KS Chen,
There is no point in being afraid of something like that on the web :)
Your comment on Alex’s blog is one good post indeed ;)
I would contact Alex and tell him about it after submitting my comment, and give some time for him to respond!
I set my comments settings to NOT approve comments if it was the first comment from that person, so I have to decided whether to accept comments from that person or not, then he is fine to go!
My recent blog: How to Get 4000 Creative Designers to work on Designing your Logo and pay only once
Allan, I myself have observed that if someone post comment without properly browsing the site, spam filter put it in spam comment. For example if i want to comment on said gentlemans’ post http://www.howtospoter.com/web-20/blogging-web-20/3-reasons-why-blog-commenting-is-important#comments. This is streight forward URL of comments section and after posting comment, spam filter treat it as spam because i directly targeted the #comment section of page which is dynamically assigned to page. So it will delete or put my comment in spam. So point is, if someone is using some type of comment reader or RSS reader and tries to post comment from that software, spam filter will catch it. This is what i have observed.
Of course it was filtered as SPAM, because of it’s length, Akismet does it all the time because Spammers often leave very long comments, such as yours, and so the filter will get tripped.

Hmm, are you sure about that? I have never got that big spam comments..
Hmm..I thought most SPAM-Filters looks at your name and compare them with your domain and if they’re equal, it’s spam. Or isn’t it that simple?
Ralf,
I have never heard of this method.. and this is no surprize, because spammers don’t sleep. This is why there should be some new way to defend against them every day.
I think commenting is very important for many reasons.
On my blog if I do not comment I do not get traffic. I check my web traffic stats and I can see traffic coming from sites I have commenting on.
Comments build relationships between the writers and readers.
Comments can help the writer become a better writer.
As for spam filters. Several of Allan’s comments int he past were considered spam and I was able to approve them. But I started using WP-SPAM Free and it kills the spam before it gets to the database. It works good against spam but it tends to kill a good comment every once in a while. I will probably turn it off in a few days if it kills anymore good comments.
My recent blog: Coffee With Hesham of Famous Bloggers
I’m probably one of the rare units of people who sometimes checks out the links of other commentators. That is if there last post title is enticing enough.
I comment to socialize and network with other bloggers, I enjoy some traffic from it, too, but mostly I enjoy meeting and getting to know other people who are also doing what I like to do.
My recent blog: What’s your blogging story?
I’m siding with Kiesha on this one, blog commenting is a great way to create “virtual links” (don’t like to call that relationships) with the people who leave comments on your blog.
On a specialised blog of mine, blog commenting allowed me to meet – in real life – some great people and we’ve now become friends. Without the initial regular “blog commenting” this wouldn’t have happened.
The actual traffic generated by the comments is minimal.

Tom,
I guess you’re the lucky one, if commenting led to real life :)
PS. You have great color scheme on your blog.
Allan,
If you are genuine (and it looks as if you are), people will be able to tell, just like they can if you are fake. I’ve been lucky to “stumble” upon genuine people and that’s why it lead to real life friendships.
Thanks you for your kind words on my colour scheme. I just need to get round to adding pictures to all these posts and then I think I’ll be able to relax … for a month or two before tweaking it again :)

I agree mostly with Imran Yousaf if it was auto filtered. Otherwise
there are no excessive links in your comment, no harsh words for a program to identify and block a comment.
I don’t believe any program blocks a comment because it is long. Infact spam comments are the shortest ones! I have never seen such a long comment without any link that is tagged as spam!
