Though it sounds impossible for a blog like mine… with Pagerank 1 – I did it! I got to the first page of Google competing with 106 millions other pages.
When I first time saw it… I didn’t pay any attention, because this number of competing results didn’t mean anything for me. And the post itself, say, is not that worthy to burst with joy… but the fact, that my blog is shining on the first page of Google, made me crazy just about a week ago. I have finally realized the reasons and the things I have accidentally done, which made this post jump THAT high.
Why and How I Got to the First Page?
The post, that is currently on the 1st page of Google, is about the value of play factor in blogging.
Check the result of Google’s first page for that certain phrase:
Results 1 – 10 of about 106,000,000 for play factor. (0.26 seconds)
Why did Googlebot like this post to let it reach Google’s first page?
Let’s see what I have done there:
- The word “play” was used 33 times (on the whole page, not just in post);
- The word “factor” was used only 5 times;
- The whole keyword phrase “play factor” only once;
- The word “play” was used 7 times between < strong >< / strong > tags;
- “Play” was also used as a part of the title of 5 pictures out of 5;
- I didn’t make any external links using “play factor” keyword phrase or part of it;
- I was using the video of Stuart Brown, where he speaks about play in general. The video is 30 minutes long and without a real interest to the topic, you would have, probably, turned it off at once;
- As you can see, the number of retweets is not huge at all.. It means, that there was not much attention;
- Meta keywords that were used there: “play”, “blogging”, “value”, “stuart brown”;
- I should also admit that I have been asking too many questions instead of making statements or answers, which usually brings more value;
- The post itself appeared to be boring for most of you.. at least I thought so, because there were made no comments;
- Because of the previous reason, I have decided not to submit it to social bookmarking sites etc;
- I didn’t show it commenting on blogs with CommentLuv as “my recent blog post”;
- And according to Google tools for webmasters my strongest keywords are “blog”, “google”, “post”, “traffic” – not “play” or “factor” or “blogging” at all;
Find the Answer and Win!
So, which of the above reasons helped my blog to get to the first page of Google? I know it would be too easy to reveal the truth, but I promise to confirm it, if you say it in the comments!
Follow the 14 facts I have named above and read 2 more clues below!

Here is the clue #1: Watch the video to help you. It mentions the true fact, which I didn’t know before.. though it was so natural and logical.
Video: Dominating First Page of Google
Clue #2: My stats from Google webmaster tools showing traffic that Google sent via “play factor” keyword phrase.

It turns out, that in order to get to the first page of Google.. you need only this…
What am I talking about? The first one, who answers correctly, gets free banner spot until the end of February.
Waiting for your answers!
Update: The answer is given in the comments.

I’m probably shooting in the dark here – but here’s my stab – since your Google Analytics says none of your visitors were “New” – it might mean that you had 45 people that were either already visit your site frequently – or who were already your friends “Google these keywords”. I might be stretching this, but since Google also uses user settings and preferences based on search and because the phrase is in your title, your previous visitors were able to find your post on Google’s first page. So all you need is friends??? I don’t know just guessing… When are you going to reveal the answer?

Keisha,
You were very close! Will see if there are any more guesses.
The term play factor has me totally confused, so I’m thinking that it has something to do with people using english as a second language. Play factor translates into some other more familiar term in other languages, right?
@Ileane
My recent blog: Social Networking in 2010 from EricaSays.com
Ileane,
Hmm.. I’ll better explain how I understand this term:
1. “Play” (noun) means a process of a game;
2. “Factor” – an abstract part of something, a tool etc;
If we correlate these two words, we have a play, as an abstract part of something. In my case it’s an abstract part of blogging. I think it means the same in English :)
So, there has nothing to do with ESL in the current case :)
But nice try!
More guesses? :))
Does it have anything to do with the brackets or whatever you call these <> around the word play in your title?
My recent blog: Be a blessing – be genuine and down to earth
Keisha,
Nope :)
Okay, you’re wrecking my brain – last guess: You have a video that uses those keywords?
My recent blog: Why I am always tired and exhausted, but happy
Keisha,
You’re extremely close this time!
Special clue #3 for you: Cut your last guess into two parts – one of them is the answer :)
I hope you have your own banner.. :)
You just need a video…???
My recent blog: Why I am always tired and exhausted, but happy
Yeap :)
Take a look at the average time on that page and the bounce rate.
This is because of the video. Now think of it.. average time is 47 minutes! How do you think Google would treat the authority of a page that keeps visitors staying for 47 minutes ? :))
Besides, the page got to the first page only after Googlebot’s 2nd visit, which was made on 10th Feb. (The post was published on 13th Jan.)
Now I need your banner :)
Hey!! This is great! Can I get it to you this evening? I’d like to advertise a site I’ve just recently had the privilege of taking over: http://weblogbetter.com – I hope you will check it out.
I’ll email you tonight!! Thanks you’re awesome!!
My recent blog: Why I am always tired and exhausted, but happy
Ok, I will be waiting :) But our evening times may differ :)
FIrst I want to say congrats for this nice improvement. There are so many ranking factors arise. Well you have done good onpage and I think the keyword is not so competitive for which you get easily rank.
For me most of my blog post getting traffic from google for particular keyword phrases and except social bookmarking my post I do not do anything. So if you do onpage on your each blog post then its enough.

Wow, congratulations Keisha! I don’t think videos keep visitors on my blogs that much longer, but I will certainly take a look after this.
This was a great contest Allan! Good work.

Charm,
Thank you.. but why “sneaky” ? :)
Ileane,
Your videos shouldn’t contain your presence, though they should be relevant to your topic. Since I hesitate a little to make videos with me, personally, I know that Internet is full of other opportunities!
I just got one golden nugget of blogging wisdom from this post alone. So, Google do consider a page an authority page if readers linger long there. And they judge this by how low the bounce rate is. Videos! Thanks for the tip Allan.
James M.,
Yeap, everything’s that simple!
Hi Allan,
I think you are right. One of my sites (http://www.tippfehler.net) ranks on the first place at Google for the word “Tippfehler”. It has PR0 ;-) but people stay there often a long time because they’re looking for eBay-bargains.
I wondered all the time, but your explanation could be the answer :-)
Ok I got to this late but I’m not commenting because of the prize :)
Though I had the inkling that it has to do with the video, I never thought that google will give so much preference to a video.
Thanks so much for sharing. I’ll definitely be using this tactic more often!

I had no idea avg time on site was important to google, videos are a great way to increase it though.

So it’s not the video, it’s getting people to hang out on a page for a while that really counts… right?
