NB! My current social buttons are different now. But the post itself is an example how you can analyze your set of buttons.
We love social media buttons. It gives us a feeling, that we belong to social media. The more – the closer, right?
Wrong.
There is some certain limit for a number of social media buttons. And each and every blog should consider its own limit. Because.. in the end it is your page load time.
Social Media Buttons vs Markets
Why do we make our blogs look like those annoying markets and super-markets? Or you did not think about that?
Do you remember how annoying are sellers in the markets? “Buy it, buy it, buy it..” Well, blogs with tons of social media buttons look just like that – “Submit it, share, submit, please, share it, share it!”
Give Explanation for Each of Your Button
There is a way to identify your own appropriate number of buttons.
Just try to explain why you have this or that button. Consider social buttons’ efficiency on other blogs and see if there were any benefits for your blog.
If you see, that people only retweet and digg your stories, then leave only these two social media buttons and uninstall all 59 others :) You will improve your page load time and bounce rate – it’s 100% guaranteed.
Explanation for My Social Media Buttons
4 Social Buttons Above the Content:
First of all, I should mention that I have these buttons above the content, because they are the most effective for my blog and they should be on the first place.
- «Retweet» button – there is no doubt, that this is a must-have button. Plus, since I offer updates via Twitter, I know, that I have a lot of people, who use Twitter;
- «Share on Facebook» button – Though this button doesn’t work for me, I think it is my fault, because I still did not promote my blog on Facebook enough. But I know for sure, that there are billions of people, who use Facebook. I also can see, that those big Social Media guru sites like Mashable have this button and it works for them. That is why I think it will take some time for my blog to make «Share on Facebook» button effective;
- «BlogEngage» button – this button works for me, because I know how to hit the front page of BlogEngage. I have done that several dozens of times and having this button on my blog is one of the little secrets for that;
- «Google Buzz» button – I have installed this button just today, because there was an update of Digg Digg WordPress plugin. They have added it and I have decided to test it. If this will not show any result, I will remove it. Besides, gurus have this Google Buzz button and it seems that it works for them;
7 Social Media Buttons Below the Content
These buttons still don’t work for me. They just don’t bring me any worthy amount of web traffic. But I use them myself sometimes. Plus, SexyBookmarks look great, which adds its value to the general design of my blog. So.. That’s why I have just 7 of them, though the whole number of available SexyBookmarks is 87.
- «Google Reader» button – Testing this one. Not sure, if someone has used it by now.
- «Google Bookmarks» button – This one is great even for your own usage. When you type in your tags there, they are then displayed in Google search results right under your submitted item. Not sure if it has any SEO value, but my intuition says – it has;
- «Digg» button – I used to Digg my stories.. But I’m tired of seeing them above my original stories in Google real-time search results. I leave this button for now, because there are still people, who are addicted with Digg. Plus, I might be wrong about Digg.. that’s why I’m still keeping it and testing its efficiency;
- «Del.icio.us» button – This button is great. And it works for me. But the number of submissions to Del.icio.us is still too low. Let it be here for now;
- «StumbleUpon» button – This one also works for me.. just like the previous one. People stumble my stories, but I have not seen any traffic spikes yet, because I don’t have a lot of time to spend on StumbleUpon meeting new stumblers and getting subscribers there;
- «LinkedIn» button – The only reason for having this button is that I have heard a lot of it. I am planning to promote my LinkedIn account sometime;
- «Mixx» button – Mixx is dofollow social bookmarking site. And it has a great SEO value for your blog. I’m using this button to submit my best articles. Not sure if someone else is using it;
That’s it! And, to tell the truth, while writing this post I have removed Sphinn and Facebook social buttons from SexyBookmarks, because I have not found any explanation for them.

What about you? Can you give explanation for each and every social media button on your blog? If not, why don’t you remove some of them?

Video Dessert: «Evolution of Dance»
The fantastic success! 137,5 millions of views on YouTube means something! I especially like what starts on the 3rd minute of the video :) You simply can’t stay indifferent to this guy and his video!

I don’t use much share button. Only had tweet button at my blog..Because I’m very active in twitter not at the other places..Plus having lot of share button will increase page loading time..
I have the same four buttons – I don’t really see a need for more and I’m feeling the same way about the Google Buzz, if it’s just taking up space, then there really isn’t a need for it.
My recent blog: How do you make time for marriage when your schedules conflict?
Fazreen,
Well.. too few of them also is not good. You do want to be promoted, right? :)
Keisha,
That’s right. If there is no need in social media buttons, why to install them?
Speaking about Google Buzz.. I hope Google Analytics will be able to show any referred traffic or activity in general.
Thanks for pointing this out. I’m going to optimize the share buttons on my blog.
My recent blog: Nashik Trip
well, i keep it much as possible…
Because we dont know what our readers like. So, i think giving them much options would be better
My button: Blogger, Buzz Up, Design Float, FriendFeed, Live, Mister Wong, MySpace, Netvibes, Newsvine, Posterous, ReddIt, Slashdot, Technorati, Tumblr, and the rest just like yours
My recent blog: The Real Superman (Manusia Super yang Sesungguhnya)
Selurus,
First I thought you’re spamming :) Now I see, that you have really removed your buttons from below the content. It looks much more clean now :)
I, actually, saw so many comments like that.. saying “Yeah, thanks, dude. Gotta check those sites” or “Yeah, you right, now I need to fix that”.
I should, probably, make a post on this topic. Too much to say :)
el7cosmos,
Which of them worked for you?
Buzz this, Digg, Retweet, Yahoo Buzz Up, Delicious, Digg, Facebook, LinkedIn, Posterous, Stumbleupon…
At least, im the one who always click that button :)
My recent blog: The Real Superman (Manusia Super yang Sesungguhnya)
el7cosmos,
Check my previous post on “Acceptable page load time” and use those 2 tools, I have mentioned there, to test your page load time – you will be surprised :)
I test in many tools, and none of them load my page longer than 2 seconds for one of my article…
My recent blog: The Real Superman (Manusia Super yang Sesungguhnya)
I have just checked it once again via FireBug (Mozilla plugin)
Your latest post’s page load time is 1 minute and 47 seconds.
You have a lot of .png images, which naturally extends your load time. I’d recommend to switch to .jpg format. It loads faster even if its size is larger.
Some service “meebo.com” makes huge load time. It’s about 1 minute. Is it a social button?
And you have a lot of tracking services.. they also affect your page load time.
The same page of yours from cache has loaded in 49 seconds..
I guess you can’t feel that because of your connection speed.
oh thats fine. :)
I had the Sociable bookmark plugin earlier, and I just randomly selected the buttons to display. I’ve tried Sexy Bookmarks but it doesn’t show the bookmark name to allow selecting sites you want. So I’ve now got the social bookmarks plugin. it has a cool feature where you can keep it hidden till some one clicks on the Share this like. Makes the page look clean while still packing the buttons in to promote content. Cool huh!
oh yes! it will be much longer measure it from browser…
agree,,meebo for sure take the big part to load my pages. I use meebo bar (the bottom bar) that has social button too
My recent blog: The Real Superman (Manusia Super yang Sesungguhnya)
el7cosmos,
So.. it’s up to you now.
Allan,
This is really a great topic to cover. Suresh from Icttrends.com and I were dicussing this on Twitter yesterday morning. He was working on load time and I suggested that he get rid of some widgets. He did and right away his load time was improved. He was ready to remove some social media buttons too but I suggested that he wait. After making so many changes to a blog you should take the time to analyze your stats, check to see if your bounce rate or any other traffic changes take place as a result. Once you’re satified with the results you can move on the the next widget or button until you reach a happy medium.
Now for me, I have a different issue on each one of my blogs when it comes to social media buttons because I use so many different blogging platforms.
I agree that a retweet button is a must but I’m not sure if I like Tweetmeme or Topsy better. I stopped using Twittley but I see it on other blogs often. What I don’t understand is why some bloggers have one of each. I think one retweet button is enough.
The Blog Engage button is a must also. The others I can do without but I’m testing the FaceBook button on my Blogging Wire blogs.
I have more to say about this but I’ll save it for another comment.
Thanks for the conversation Allan.
My recent blog: Blogging Legacy – Have You Considered Yours?
Ileane,
It’s my pleasure, when I see, that my topics, actually, mean something for others. This means, that I am on the right way.
Speaking about Tweetmeme and Topsy buttons. I’m not sure, if there is any point of using them both at the same time. But since these are different services.. why not? There is also the 3rd type: “backtype” retweet button. So.. this is already 3 of them :)
I’m not using all of them, because it simply looks oddly for me.
Thanks for stopping by :)
Good post. I, too, am not a fan of blogs cluttered with social media buttons. On my blog I have only retweet button and a very subtle “ShareThis” plugin, which allows to share content on pretty much all social networks. However, I might add a couple more popular buttons on a visible place in the future and remove the ShareThis plugin.
My recent blog: What it Takes to Start a Successful Blog
Great post. I have been thinking about giving an explanation of my social icons.
I like the google button add. I am thinking about removing my coded button and use the diggdigg button.
I use diggdigg. I have my compact icons before the content as yours but it doesn’t line up like yours. There not align left and space far apart. I tried playing with weight setting but couldn’t get right. What settings did you use?
My recent blog: Uptime Robot Server Monitoring Services
I have pasted them directly into my “single” post template before the 〈?php the_content(); ?〉 line using special codes.
You are offered to use the code like 〈?php digg_digg_gbuzz_generate(‘Compact’); ?〉 for each of your button. Well.. I have used it to line up just like you have mentioned it. And fixed their positions with a little bit of extra CSS coding :)
PS. Good comment :)
@Ileane,
After removing lot of widgets and decorations, Finally I decided to remove the blogger platform itself! Funny, isn’t it? But the noble causes behind this was:
1. Blogger platform demanded to keep on working with codes than on the posts. I found it far less flexible.
2. Comments on JavaScript served commenting systems like IntenseDebate are not visible to Google and not indexed. Even my commenter are not getting link juice reward for commenting.
3. I earned a bit money so that I can host my blog on Self Hosted WordPress Platform :-D
It was an enjoying journey with blogger.com thogh.
@Allan
I tried not to select the buttons as many as I could but after I read your post, I think, I’m still greedy. Hey! There are still other half dozen of buttons that are not working for me? Shall I go and remove them now?
My recent blog: How to fix broken links from your old posts?
Suresh,
Definitely :)
One positive is that the buttons can make a site look more professional. Some casual web surfers have no idea what they are, but they still know that a lot of important sites and such have them.
My recent blog: John Cena Moves – Finisher Moveset etc.
Share buttons are extremely convient, especially when you are trying to reach a broader audience with your product or service, this is a great way to expose your postings without having to do an extreme amount of work.
