Thanks for the nice elaboration on alexa ranking. I have one good experience with alexa. I was out of my work for 15 days and during these time my blog alexa ranking decreased very fast. Before my alexa rank was approx 60000, but now my blog alexa rank is 72000.

I have been having a strange experience with my Alexa ranking. My traffic is increasing and yet my Alexa dropped. I had this happen one other time for a month or two and then my ranking shot back up.

TinaT,

You were, probably, getting the same amounts of traffic, but your bounce rate or visitors’ average time on site decreased.

Thats a really nice and easy explanation about Alexa Rank.
I follow Alexa Rank cos it is updated daily. I’ve set a target to be within 1M rank by the end of Feb, I’m getting closer as each day passes.

Selurus,

Until you keep getting traffic.. even if it’s at the same level.. your Alexa ranking will be improving.

Using Alexa to analyze other blogs or websites is a great idea. Don’t know why, after always checking my rankings, I never consider looking at their growth when considering commenting of guest blogging.

Allan,

Thanks for this info. One thing you didn’t mention is Alexa reviews. Do have any idea how they affect the Alexa rank? I’m not sure where to find the answer to this question. As you might know, there was a problem that Alexa had dropped several reviews by mistake. I contacted them on Twitter and they finally came back and admitted there was a problem. But I only knew about the problem from DragonBlogger.

If you find out about this please let me know.

Ileane,

Internet is too logical.. that’s why if you cannot find any logical explanation for some sort of a problem, then there is no explanation.

This is why I do not beleive, that there is something to do with Alexa reviews.

But still I also do not have any exact answer. I will update this post as soon as I find something.

Hi Allan,
I have a question: You say, they collect my traffic data by their crawler? How is this possible? I think the crawler don’t know how much visitors are on my site. Or am I wrong?

Alexa crawler makes snapshots of your pages. Those snapshots become a part of his data base. Well.. then there’s something to do with Alexa traffic ranking technology.

Alexa.com should put a disclaimer on its website warning people that their data is “For Amusement / Entertainment Use Only” as Alexa rankings CAN be easily manipulated.

I’m also very interested in how the Alexa reviews influence your ranking through their service. It’s a great tool, though as with everything, must be taken with a grain of salt and used in conjunction with all the other great internet tools available to us.
