Ok, the story is following.
I’ve written a post, called Do Follow VS Nofollow – What Loses?. Nothing special. I’d call it a regular post. But.. this brought me some other result, which I didn’t expect.
All this story happened today, when I’ve seen ExtremeJohn’s post No Do Follow Blog vs Do Follow Blog. Whoah! What whould you do, if you were me, when you’ve seen a post with a title just like yours, coming out in a day after yours? I think, you’d have just commented it saying how cool is it and “check mine” :) I’ve seen that. But.. Something happened. I decided to blame John. First of all, I’ve commented on his article at BlogEngage. Then I’ve unfollowed him on Twitter and unsubscribed to his blog. This grew into a quarrel. Not that hot, but still.. Check it out:
Cool, huh? That’s what I call a “self-promotion”. Yes.. I didn’t expect, that it would work. But it’ve worked. And I’m glad, that John made a respond in his latest post, called – 10 Reasons I Wouldn’t Copy Your Article
Now, John, don’t get me wrong, but I’ve tried this kind of a promotion for good. All the “tools” were unusual. But that makes this situation unique. And I wanted that.. at least, because my niche is website traffic and promotion.
And yeah.. I do believe, that you’ve written your story without stealing my idea. There are, actually, dozens of them on the Internet. I’ve checked today. Moreover, your content is unique and there are almost none of the similarities with mine. But again.. I didn’t expect, that you would even publish a reply article for me. And thank you. This whole situation.. or “quarrel” is a very cool stuff for other people, as an example of another way of promotion.
Now, please, dear spectators of this quarrel and readers, say something :) What do you think of this kind of a promotion? Was it hot? Would you ever do that? Have you tried? Was is deliberately? Or that came out just like our story with ExtremeJohn?
Update:
ExtremeJohn continues. I’ve got simply nothing to say. This is his own way of blogging. I’ve touched the shit and it seems, that there’s no way to stop it. Somehow, I’m starting to doubt, that he hadn’t stolen my idea.
I hope, that you find this story fun, because I do. And now some masks of bloggers, that usually thank you for your posts, are taken off. Their faces are as ugly, as.. well, I don’t know. Anyways, let’s see what’s in the end of this. I’m so excited about what John would do next :)
Update (Dec. 29th, 2009):
That was funny. I’ve just googled the phrase “ExtremeJohn shit“. Now I feel satisfied after reading this review of ExtremeJohn.com, because it means, that I’m not the only one, who felt sick of this person.

David Hobson,
Well.. maybe.
haha David that’s too funny!
From my personal perspective it’s the wrong way to get traffic. Stating someone else is copying your content and posting about it and un following them is wrong.
But to be completely Frank I don’t think you did this on purpose. I think you’re in a rut and this is an easy way for you to surface in the best possible condition.
Building relationships and commenting on other blogs is better then this method of marketing.
To be honest this was very foolish. You may get hits today but it won’t last as people will stop visiting your blog.
Am I wrong, or did you just say you linkbaited John? If so, that was either very clever, or very stupid….yet to be seen. I read both articles, and both responses and I really see no similarities between the two. I recently wrote an article about do-follow comments and plan to follow it up with a comparison too. But, so have hundreds of others does that make it stealing? The way I see it, as long as you are writing your OWN opinions, facts and siting sources, it is your content.
Are you also asking that nobody else write about website promotion and traffic, because I plan to have a few articles on that topic too….
I don’t plan to unsubscribe from you as quick as others, but come on man!
bbrian017,
Thank you for the comment, Brian.
“I think you’re in a rut and this is an easy way for you to surface in the best possible condition.”
With all my respect to you, this is the easiest explanation of my actions. But.. believe it or not, it’s not correct.
John has described everything with his perfect English and, without deep thinking, it’s very easy to be on his side.
Well.. I did what I did. And I don’t regret about it, because my aim was to show an example. No other explanations.
Keith,
Thank you for sharing your opinion. I guess, that I’ve explained everything in this post and partially in the response to Brian.
It’s beyond clear that your article and John’s have nothing in common, other than a few words in the title. Accusing him of stealing your work was uncalled for.
There is such a thing as libel, you know. Accusing someone of copyright infringement is serious business. You could end up getting sued over something like this.
Anne,
“Accusing someone of copyright infringement is serious business.”
I’ve mentioned only the “idea” itself, not the whole content.
Allan;
So let me get this straight…you are willing to deliberately and falsely accuse someone of plagarism JUST TO GET MORE PAGE VIEWS?
You know, I’m a newbie blogger but I know enough that you’re not going to get very far in this business by pissing people off. Quite the opposite – you build a community by collaboration not by denegration!
I had a lot of respect for you Allan, as one new blogger to another, but you’ve lost that respect from me and several other folks who have taken the time to comment on your blog here today.
I’m not sure how pro bloggers black list other bloggers (and I don’t want to find out) but if I were you, I’d seriously consider writing an apology post ASAP!
@donpower
donpower,
First of all, thanks for your advice. I appreciate that.
“So let me get this straight…you are willing to deliberately and falsely accuse someone of plagarism JUST TO GET MORE PAGE VIEWS?”
But here you are wrong. I’ve predicted, that there won’t be anything good. The lesson is shown. Experiment is experiment. I’m not going to apologize, if someone doesn’t understand the point.
Moreover, I expected to lose someone’s respect for me. I’ve got nothing to do with that.
Thanks for the comment :)
I hope you haven’t shot yourself in the foot. Not everyone is going to follow your logic or even believe your motivation.
You are here for the long haul, aren’t you? A spurt of traffic will gain you exposure, but, if the taste is negative, that traffic spurt will not be a positive thing.
Keep it real is always good advice. Don’t losesight of your goal.
Don’t Be too much on it….anyway, It is a funny story to hear..I have seen many people copying My Idea…For example : When I wrote about Successful Blogging, I saw another guy/site(Not revealing him) wrote about the same thing and submitted it to blog engage…Not only he wrote about successful blogging..he also copied my Time management…see that..I can’t say that is an accident..isn’t that purposeful..I thought this for day and wrote about it, and I see another copying my Idea…What should I do ?
Blogging gives us the voice to express our opinions and ideas and any similarity coincidence or intentional is inevitable. Neither one is to blame. In the end, the better ones prevail.
As long as there’s no mere copying word by word, it won’t matter. Ideas evolve. These are not inventions that require patent for security of ownership. Though sometimes, being the first to come up with an idea doesn’t mean getting the whole credit, sometimes it depends on how an idea is presented and which one gets the attention it deserves.
Was the traffic worth tarnishing your reputation? I may have thought more highly of you & your blog hadn’t you accused someone of copying your blog just to get traffic. Sad!
Hey Allan
That could have been provocative, but these are not out of the game..I should applaud you for having tried it out, though it has backfired and your readers are cursing on you now..
I have featured your post on my KT Featured series today. Feel free to read my advice here: http://blog.knewthis.com/promoting-contests-faq-hesham-zebida-interview-and-advice-to-allan/
Rose,
Thanks for your comment.
My reputation? Well.. It’s too early to speak about my reputation.
And “No”. The traffic wasn’t worthy, though I must say.. It wasn’t too big, because ExtremeJohn is not CopyBlogger or ProBlogger.
Anand Srinivasan,
Thanks for the advice!
Well that’s a nice drama. Why don’t you guys stop pulling eachothers legs. Move on forget the incidence.

Rose,
It’s OK now. I’m moving on.
It just shows you how ignorant I am about what is going on in the blog community, I had no idea any of this happened. I keep to myself relatively, everyone competes in the same niche, so there is bound to be titles and topics that are nearly exact. If I find an article on someones site that I liked, I always cite the source and give a backlink.

Tips for Comments:
Read the tips before you hit the "Submit" button.
NB! Though your name links are nofollow, I can make your ComLuv links dofollow - manually. And I will make them dofollow, if you show your most relevant recent post.
1. Try to add value;
2. Don't be another "congratulator";
3. Use your real name or promotional name, not keywords;
4. Do not use "name@keywords", there is no "keyword love" plugin here;
5. Try to be polite, where it's possible;
6. Do not agree with everything - that sounds and looks ridiculous;
7. If you wish to leave some link to one of your posts, or to some other - make sure the source is relevant;
8. Use advantages of CommentLuv on this blog. Show your most relevant recent blog post;
9. Share your opinion even if it is contrary to mine;
10. Check twice your grammatical errors;
